Go Canada!

With today being the opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics in VANCOUVER (yay Vancouver!) how could I not write an Olympic-related post on such an exciting day???

Though the city has been preparing for YEARS, the last little while has been a frenzy, and (according to Jeff who is in the city daily) Vancouver has transformed. Given that I’m not in Vancouver everyday (South Surrey is a suburb of Vancouver, about 40 minutes away), the fact that the Olympics was coming didn’t totally fully sink in until this week…

Tuesday morning was the first time it started to sink in (keep in mind I don’t really watch tv, so I haven’t been watching much news coverage or seen any Olympic commercials). At 6:15 am (ish) we awoke to a PARTY going past our house. The torch was being run past our house, complete with a couple of floats, music, and a huge crowd of people (especially considering what time it was). Pretty neat. I was in my pj’s and had Carys in my arms ( Ben was sleeping away), so I just peaked out the window at the spectacle. Jeff however threw some clothes on and ran outside to get a bettter look. Here’s his (very blurry :) ) blackberry camera picture:

Then on Thursday I saw my first Olympic commercial:

Man, if that doesn’t get you all patriotic and excited about the Games, I don’t know what will! I got all excited about planning some visits into the city to check out some of the free family events with the kids. Of course, we can’t go down without showing a little national pride, right? So I sent Jeff over to the Bay downtown (which apparently has a whole floor or two dedicated to Olympic merchandise) with my shopping list:

For Daddy

For Mommy

Love this t-shirt, I’d totally wear it after the Olympics too!

For Kiddies – Red Hoodie like Daddy’s for Ben, White Hoodie like Mommy’s for Carys

BUT, when my dear husband went to the Bay to get our gear, it seems everyone else had the same idea, because all of the colours/sizes we needed were sold out. :( A sad Canadian was I. Moral of the story? Don’t wait until the day before the Olympics to buy Olympic wear!!! I’ll of course be checking the HBC site and the stores for new shipments, and will be sure to take a cheesy picture of all of us dressed up in our Canadian wear when we hit the city!

As you probably know, the Opening Ceremonies are tonight (6pm Pacific time) and from all reports (from friends who have been apart of the rehearsals) they promise to be A-MAZING! Can’t wait….be sure to tune in!

Have a wonderful Friday and I’ll be back to tomorrow with this weeks recipe, Peach Upside-down Cake (bet you thought I’d forgotten about the recipe of the week!).

I can’t believe the Olympics are so close and we’re not going! I’m envious. Enjoy the festivities.

Hey I wish I had known you wanted olympic gear , I was in the Bay in Victoria yesterday…I’m sure they still had stuff. Liam and I went out early to see the torch too but they actually went by at 6:15 so we missed it…wouldn’t for anything have missed the sight of so many red-dressed souls out at that hour..it was a spectacle in itself.
