Getting Crafty

Now I’m not really a crafty person per se. I like doing projects (sewing, painting, etc.) but I’m not crafty in the Martha Stewart way. But, having a preschooler who LOVES to do crafts means I get into the spirit a lot more. Yesterday afternoon we decided an Easter craft was in order, and of course we went with a classic – dying eggs.

I’m sure you all have done this before in the past, so no need to bore you with the nitty gritty. I’ve seen all sorts of methods for making these pretty eggs, from colouring on them with crayons before dying, to wax, to oil in the dye bath to give the eggs a marbleized look. I wracked my brain for an idea of how we could spice our eggs up a bit, and the only thing I could find around the house was painters tape. So, we went with it….

While Ben applied random bits of tape to his eggs, Mommy started making stripes to decorate hers. Then, got inspired remembering this great chevron fabric I saw the other day {Schumacher “High Voltage” }:

But then again, was I just  subconsciously still lusting after that dress?

Regardless, I got into the chevron groove, painstakingly applying strips of painters tape to make a pattern before dunking my egg in its dye bath.

Now, I won’t lie. My mind started to whirl with all the potential fabric-inspired patterns I could create on eggs, if only I didn’t have work to do, children to care for, a husband and a house to look after, or the need to sleep. Sigh, an Imperial Trellis egg may have to be created by someone with more time, dedication, or a worse case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder than I.

Haha! So while I’m not OCD enough to make a real Trellis Egg, apparently I have just enough obsession to attempt to creat one in Photoshop with my meagre skills.

INSTEAD, I abandoned my trellis egg dream and stuck with a few simple designs, and here are the simple, fun-coloured eggs that resulted:

Wishing you a very Happy Easter!

  1. Beautiful Karla! Way to take egg dying to another level! PS. I think your photoshop skills are pretty darn good :) Happy Easter!

Very nice! I like the way the colour bleeds a little under the tape…it looks a bit ikat…ish. You could do that pattern…just draw it on the eggs in white wax crayon and then dip in dye (easy batik). Maybe next year.

  3. PS. I have a little something for you over on my blog :)

  4. These eggs are great, Karla!! Like Jess, I like the way the colours have bleed into the taped off area… makes me think of tie-died t-shirts, only edible!! ;-) Now that trellis egg… THAT would have been impressive!! Ha! Love the fabric inspiration by the way.

They have a knock-off version of that dress at Jacob’s for way less. Haven’t seen it on but looks good on the hanger!

  6. YEsss Michelle! Thanks for posting this! I should have offered a prize for finding a knock-off :) I’m totally heading there today or tomorrow!
