Summer Style

The first day of summer may not officially be until June 21, but to this sun-hungry South Surrey resident, it feels like summer’s come early.

The family has spent the last week or so enjoying the warmth and sunshine. French doors have been flung open all day, the bbq has been going nonstop, and life just seems more relaxed.

A change in season always gives me the itch to tweak something around the house, and summer is no different. It’s time to fresh up and brighten up; to make home a relaxed oasis in which to kick back and enjoy the best that summer in the Lower Mainland has to offer.

How can you bring summer inside?

  • Sparkly glass candlesticks in a variety of sizes and styles, grouped en masse on a mantle, table or sideboard.

  • Crisp white cotton slipcovers on chairs.

  • Nature and beach inspired accessories- stunning red coral branches (psst..coral motifs are hot again this year!), antique silver bowls of rocks and shells collected on beach visits, and woven baskets.

  • Fresh flowers- even better when given by your husband or picked from the garden by your kids!

  • Bright punches of color with new pillow covers or throws. Pick fabrics in gorgeous hues that make you smile. Look for unique color combinations- pinky red coral and creamy putty, Tiffany blue with charcoal. On a neutral backdrop, these great shades will have huge impact and feel fresh.

  • Bare floors with simple sea grass or sisal rugs.

Who needs a summer cabin when home is such a sunny and stylish place to be? Put away those items that scream ‘winter’ and spend some time this week introducing summer into your home.
