Kids Room Art DIY – Framed Vintage Calendar Images

So yesterday I made some progress on our master bedroom, doing some fabric shopping for drapes which I hope to have made (by a wonderful seamstress I know, not me thankfully!) over the next few weeks.

Since finishing the master bedroom is underway, I thought I’d finish up a (small) project that I’ve been planning for awhile for Ben’s room.

I’ve had one of those Cavallini calendars of vintage posters around for ages, and this one in particular I’ve thought would be perfect to somehow frame some images from for Ben’s room. All the images are of vintage travel posters, and the colours are lovely, and go perfectly with the scheme in Ben’s room (which you’ll be seeing pictures of it soon, promise!).

These are the two I picked out to use. I love the flags in the ship one (he has some of these nautical flags from Land of Nod in his room which they echo) and the airplane in the other he loved.

Today I was at Walmart grocery shopping (on a sidenote, have you tried their 12 grain honey bread? So. Good. Our family won’t eat anything else!) and picked up some inexpensive frames that I thought may be close to fitting the images (they aren’t standard sized). But for $19 the price was right! Don’t you love the cheesy “photos” they put in frames???

We got the frames home, and began our Mini DIY Project for the day! After putting our groceries away of course :)

First I opened the frames up and removed the black plastic liner thingy that fit inside the mat. Not a fan of those. (how do you like that action shot!)

Then I lifted out the mats and centred them over the images. They of course didn’t fit perfectly, but that’s ok! The border of extra space on each side isn’t a big deal to me, and this project wasn’t worth spending the money to me for custom mats or framing.

Next step, clean that glass! Nothing worse than putting a frame back together to find little specs trapped inside! (another action shot! That’s right I can spray glass cleaner AND take pictures at the same time…I may have also been holding a toddler, drinking a latte and texting Jeff during this sequence, are you impressed? :) )

Once the glass was squeaky clean and DRY, I put all the pieces back together, propped the first finished piece of art up against the kitchen backsplash (I was working at the island) and admired the finished product!

And here are both pieces…all done and waiting for our family picture hanger (AKA Daddy/Jeff) to put them up in Ben’s room. They will hang above a row of iron hooks for coats etc….gotta keep that boy organized!

Just waiting for a lamp for his bedside table and hang a few things and his room will be ready for a photo session! Can’t wait! Thanks for joining me for my very small project today…I’d love to hear about any projects (framing/art or otherwise ) that you are working on!

Off to do my next project – cooking dinner!

They look great! I’m a big fan of store bought frames when you’re not dealing with valuable art! Can’t wait to see the pics of them in the room.
